Etymology

Possibly from Akkadian, if the Akkadian word is not an Aramaic borrowing. Also attested in Classical Syriac ܫܡܟܐ (šemkā, “body odor”), ܫܘܡܟܐ (šumkā, “onion”), and ܫܡܟܘܬܐ (“smell of a cave”). Possibly originally referring to a bulbous plant, reflected in this word usually being said as ܪܹܝܚܵܐ ܕܫܸܡܟ݂ܵܐ ― rēḥā dšimḵā ― smell of šimxā.
