From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰráwgʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrówgʰos (lie, falsehood, deception). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬖𐬀 (draoγa), Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎢𐎥 (d-r-u-g /⁠drauga⁠/) (whence Persian دروغ (dorôğ)), Baluchi دروگ (darog, lie). See also द्रोह (droha) and द्रुह् (druh).
