From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰarȷ́ʰíš (“padding, pillow, cushion”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰolǵʰ-í-s. Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬱 (bar^əziš, “pad, pillow”), Persian بالش (pillow, cushion).

बर्हिस् • (barhís) stem, n or m

1. a bed, cushion, or layer of Kuśa grass, strewn over the place where the Yajña is performed, to serve as a sacred surface on which to present the oblations, and as a seat for the gods and for the worshippers
   • c. 1700 BCE – 1200 BCE, Ṛgveda 6.16.10:

     अग्न॒ आ या॑हि वी॒तये॑ गृणा॒नो ह॒व्यदा॑तये ।
     नि होता॑ सत्सि ब॒र्हिषि॑ ॥

     ágna ā́ yāhi vītáye gṛṇānó havyádātaye.
     ní hótā satsi barhíṣi.

     Come, Agni, lauded, to the feast; come to the offering of the gifts.
     As the Priest, be seated on the bed of grass.
