Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀫𑀙 (macha /maccha/) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit मत्स्य (mátsya). Cognate with Awadhi मछरी (machrī), Gujarati માછલી (māchlī), Konkani मासोळी (māsoḷī), Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀰𑁆𑀘𑀮𑀻 (maścalī).[1] This -𑀮- (-la-) extended form appears to have spread from Eastern Hindi.
