Etymology
Of unknown origin. Attempts to connect the root to Dravidian have been unsuccessful. There is a vague similarity with Chinese 頒/颁 (bān, “to confer”) and/or 分 (fēn, “to divide, distribute”). Considering the root is only attested in Classical onwards, this word was possibly borrowed from Sinitic merchants from Southern China who pronounced the word/s closer to van or ven. The ट् is problematic, however; it is perhaps an ad hoc addition to differentiate from वनोति (vanoti, meaning “to desire, love or wish for”)
