From นคร (ná-kɔɔn, city) +‎ พนม (pá-nom, referring to the Phanom stupa); literally "city of Phanom"; after the ancient Phanom stupa in the city; coined by King Rama I of Siam in 2329 BE (1786/87 CE); formerly known as นครบุรี (ná-kɔɔn-bù-rii).[1]
