The "intestine" and "core" senses are from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *wu (belly; stomach; intestine; kidney); cognate with Nuosu (vu), Tangut 𗎨 (*wju², intestines) (STEDT). Luce 1981 also compares Old Chinese (OC *qew, “waist, kidney”).

The other senses are grouped together with the "guts" sense by MED, though they probably should not be - that said, neither STEDT nor Luce 1981 mentions these senses.
