From Proto-Kartvelian *ḳwil-. Cognate with Mingrelian კველა (ḳvela, stool, seat), Laz კული (ǩuli, chair). According to Fähnrich, dialectal Georgian კვილო (ḳvilo, small block of wood, tree stump) is possibly borrowed from Svan.

According to Klimov, from a Northeast Caucasian source. Compare Tsez къуӏри (q’uʿri, bench), Hinukh къуре (q’ure), Dargwa уркьули (urq̇uli, board), for which Starostin-Nikolayev reconstructs Proto-Northeast Caucasian *q̇wǝ̆lʔă.
