Laz
Etymology
A new term proposed in 1980's from ლაზი (lazi, “Laz”) + -ონა (-ona, “-field”).
Proper noun
ლაზონა • (lazona) (Latin spelling Lazona)
- A historical and cultural region of the southwestern Caucasus and northeastern Anatolia along the Black Sea coastline, traditionally inhabited by the Laz people, also called Lazistan.
- Synonym: ლაზისთანი (lazistani)
მა ლაზონაზ ნა-რენ მსქვა ჯოღრაჶჲაფე ოჭარუთე ირიზ ბოჩინაფამ- ma lazonaz na-ren mskva coğrafyape oç̌arute iriz boçinapam
- I write and introduce the beautiful geography of Lazona to everyone.
Usage notes
- The suffix -ონა (-ona) is added to inanimate nouns to form toponyms. This term is therefore not unquestionably adopted by a large number of Laz people.
- ლაზი (lazi, “Laz people”)
- ლაზური (lazuri, “Laz language”)
