A Middle Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian (plšmwlw' /fraš(a)murw/), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫜𐫡𐫢𐫏𐫖𐫡𐫇 (fršymrw), 𐫜𐫡𐫢𐫏𐫖𐫇𐫡𐫇 (fršymwrw), 𐫜𐫡𐫏𐫢𐫏𐫖𐫇𐫡𐫇 (fryšymwrw /frašemurw/, “peacock”). First etymologized by Marr, apud Salemann.
The Iranian word is a compound meaning "wonder-bird", whose first member is the etymon of Old Armenian հրաշ (hraš, “wonder”) and the second member is *mr̥gáh (“bird”), as in Old Armenian սիրամարգ (siramarg, “peacock”).
