Probably from Old Armenian *ծառափն (*caṙapʻn), from ծառ (caṙ, tree) +‎ ափն (apʻn, edge, bank).[1] For the sense "extensive rocky outcrop" compare ქარაფი (karapi). Related to Mingrelian წირფუ (c̣irpu).

Noun

წარაფი (c̣arapi) (plural წარაფები)

  1. extensive rocky outcrop
  2. long copse
  3. (Kakheti) unploughed strip between fields
  4. tsarapi (a wine variety from Kakheti)

Usage notes

The form წარავი (c̣aravi) found only in Čubinov 1840[2] is likely a misspelling. Later dictionaries of Čubinov have only წარაფი (c̣arapi).[3][4][5]
