Compared to Lithuanian plėvė (“fine, thin skin”) and Proto-Slavic *plěva (“membrane”), with prefixing. The form ἐπιπόλαιον (epipólaion) arose from connection with ἐπιπόλαιος (epipólaios, “superficial, on the surface”).
