Sound word without etymology. Note the formal similarity with ῥόθος (rhóthos, “rushing noise”), ῥοῖβδος (rhoîbdos, “rushing noise”) and ῥοῖζος (rhoîzos, “whistling sound”). The medial -χθ- may be compared with μόχθος (mókhthos, “toil, trouble”), βρόχθος (brókhthos, “throat”) and ὀχθέω (okhthéō, “to be troubled, angered”).
