平文 (píngwén) is a Japanese loanword, first used by the creator of the Hepburn romanization, James Curtis Hepburn, on the cover of his Japanese–English and English–Japanese dictionary 和英語林集成 (Waei Gorin Shūsei). He used the kanji to address himself, the former character 平 being pronounced as "hei", and the latter 文 being pronounced as "bon" (among many other variations). Heibon is an imitation of his surname, "Hepburn".
