From Middle Chinese 般若波羅蜜 (MC paen nyaeX pa la mjit), itself being Kumārajīva's transliteration of Sanskrit प्रज्ञापारमिता (prajñāpāramitā); equivalent to 般若 (hannya, wisdom) + 波羅蜜 (haramitsu, completeness, perfection).

Compare 般若波羅蜜多 (hannya haramitta), Xuanzang's later transliteration of the same Buddhist term.
