逆臣
- (chiefly archaic) treasonable minister
Usage notes
Ever since The New Book of Tang, chiefly written by Ouyang Xiu and Song Qi, a clear distinction has been established between this word and 反臣 (fǎnchén) (or 叛臣). Had someone committed regicide or ever crowned himself to found a new dynasty, that must be called a 逆臣 (nìchén), whereas if he had revolted but only ruled over a certain region in the borderland, viz. a secessionist, not coveting nor challenging the imperial throne, or had collaborated with the enemy and instituted a puppet regime, such person is to be called a 叛臣.
