First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 가모〮티 (Yale: kàmwóthì).
Possibly from 가물다 (gamulda, “to be blighted with drought”) or 감다 (gamda, “to be black”) + —치 (-chi), a suffix often found in fish names.
