First attested in the Beobeo eonhae (法語諺解 / 법어언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 악대 (Yale: aktay). Ultimately a borrowing from Middle Mongol ᠠᠭᠲᠠᠯᠠᠬᠤ (aɣtalaqu, “to castrate”) (whence Mongolian агтлах (agtlax)). Compare also Manchu ᠠᡴᡨᠠ (akta, “castrated, gelded”).
