Etymology

Literally "white-headed goose." From (huin, white) +‎ 머리 (meori, head) +‎ 기러기 (gireogi, wild goose).

Coined by Ki-Sup Lee (이기섭), a South Korean ornithologist, in his report on the first confirmed sighting of the bird in Korea in 1996. "흰머리기러기(신칭)는 영명은 Emperor Goose이며 학명은 Anser canagicus이다."[1] The term has been widely adopted in Korean ornithological publications.
