From apo- (lacking, without; away, apart, from Ancient Greek ἀπο- (apo-) or ἀπό (apó)) +‎ Ancient Greek καυλός (kaulós, stem, stalk; shaft). A deliberate metathesis of the earlier Aulacopus, another genus of longhorn beetles, from which this genus was separated.
