Middle High German bluot was originally a feminine inflecting to blüete in the plural and genitive/dative singular; later this alternation was levelled either by generalizing the form blüete or by converting bluot into a masculine. Related with blühen and Blume. Cognate with Old English blēd (shoot, flower), dialectal English blead, which see.
