In at least Southern Savonia probably from höylä as an occupational surname. However, if originally from Karelia, vernacular forms of the Russian name Феофил (Feofil) also come into question. Furthermore, in Western Finland, the form Höylä may have developed by syncope from Höytölä in regions where the weak grade of t was a l;[1] this place name may be equivalent to höyty + -lä.
