First attested as homoet in 1347. Etymology unknown. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch ho (“high”) and made (“hayfield, meadow”) that underwent a vowel shift, maybe under the (folk-etymological) influence of Middle Dutch homoet (“conceit, hubris”). Compare Hoogmeien.
