Dutch

Etymology

First attested as manlande in 1220. Compound of an unclear first element and land (land). The first element may be cognate with dialectal haaiman (sandy land located next to or among sand dunes) or West Flemish man (land which floods slightly, low-lying pasture). An alternative hypothesis conjectures that the first element is a misspelling of Middle Dutch mare (watercourse).
