Dutch

Etymology

  • (Hellendoorn) First attested as merler around 1390. Compound of an unclear first element and laar (intensively cultivated forest). Compare Marl.
  • (Olst-Wijhe) First attested as mernhem around 1390. Etymology uncertain. The oldest attestation seems to suggest a derivation from a compound of Middle Dutch merne (elevated land next to a watercourse) and heem (home settlement); however a development from this form into Marle is highly unlikely.
