Etymology
The first genuine instance of the toponym seems to have been the Old Czech Policz in a 1253 document by Ottokar II of Bohemia granting the location the status of locus forēnsis (“market-place”). Old Czech Policz probably derives from (“a village on a plain, in open terrain”), from pole (“field, plain”). The nad Metují element is a more recent addition, meaning “on Metuje”, although that river flows outside the town’s municipal territory.[1]
