Proto-Finnic
Etymology
From Proto-Finno-Ugric *-mpa. The final vowel change from *a to *i is also seen in *-in, *-pi and *-t'oin, and the original final vowel is preserved in inflected forms.
The stem triggers a change from a final stem -A- to -e-. This change, also seen in some verb derivatives (*-ldak, *-t'ak), has been proposed to be a regular change (with the condition that the -A- be unstressed) by Kallio (2012).
Suffix
*-mpi
- Comparative suffix.
Inflection
Oblique stem: *-mpA
