Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Via earlier *pale from Proto-Uralic *pälä (half). The development is regular, according to Aikio (2012) and Zhivlov (2014); compare e.g. *loomi from Proto-Uralic *lämä, *talvi from Proto-Uralic *tälwä.

The word has also been compared to Slavic *polъ (half), presuming an irregular stem-type shift *pola > *pooli after loaning. According to Aikio (2013, 2016), previously proposed examples of this change in inherited vocabulary are to be explained otherwise, however (compare e.g. *kooldak).
