According to Aikio (2024), from Proto-Finno-Permic *tappa (whence also Erzya (tapo), Eastern Mari тово (tovo, “oakum, tow, tangled threads”)), with the suffix + *-ra. The origin of the second-syllable u remains unclear.[1]
