Etymology

Unknown. Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *wáśkan (“wax”), according to Pokorny, both from Proto-Indo-European *wokso, *wos-ko- (“wax”). However, compare Latin velum (“sailcloth”) and Dutch wiek (“windmill sail”), from *weg- (“to weave”). It could instead be from a pre-Indo-European substrate.
