Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *léwh₃trom (“that which is used for washing; washbasin, bathtub”), from the root *lewh₃- (“to wash, bathe”) +‎ *-trom (instrument noun suffix). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *lowatrom (“washbasin”) and Proto-Germanic *lauþrą (“niter soap, lather, foam”). Compare also early Latin lavābrum < *lowh₃-eh₂-dʰrom.
