From *a- (“not, un”) +‎ *grúH (“pregnant”) (compare Sogdian (γrʾnh /⁠γrān⁠/, “heavy, pregnant”) from the same root), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷrúh₂, perhaps metathesized from earlier *gʷr̥h₂úh₂,[1] from *gʷr̥h₂ús (“heavy”) +‎ *-uh₂ (feminizing suffix).[2]
