Unknown; possibly borrowed from the BMAC substrate.[1][2] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *ked- (to make smoke, soot), perhaps cognate with Ancient Greek κέδρος (kédros, cedar), Proto-Slavic *čàdъ (smoke).[3]
