Borrowed from Thracian *Ebrus. Cognate with Ancient Greek Ἕβρος (Hébros), Latin Hebrus, Ebrus.

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃yébʰ-rós (“male, fertilizer, inseminator”), from *h₃yebʰ- (“to copulate”). Related to Proto-Slavic *jetì, *jebàti (“to copulate, to fuck”).
Alternatively, derived from Thracian *ebru, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wérus (“wide”).
