Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Of uncertain origin. According to Pokorny, the word may have originally meant "light", from a *g-extension of Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to shine); however, this does not seem to be followed by later linguists. The comparison to Sanskrit बृहस्पति (bṛhaspati), Avestan 𐬠𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬔 (bərəg), Avestan 𐬠𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬘𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (bərəjaiieiti) is highly speculative.
