From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kateras, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷóteros (“which of 2”), from *kʷos (“what?, which?”) + *-teros (contrastive). Cognate with Lithuanian katràs (“which (of the two)”), Proto-Germanic *hwaþeraz, Sanskrit कतर (katara), Ancient Greek πότερος (póteros).
