Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *láupīˀtei.
- Per Derksen, from a -p- variant of Proto-Indo-European *lowbʰ-, found in *lubъ (“bast”), Latin liber (“bark, book”).
- Per Vasmer, Russian лупи́ть (lupítʹ) is derived from лу́па (lúpa, “scab”).
- Per Trubachev, from *lupъ (“peel, shell?”) + *-iti.
- Chernkyh adds as cognates Ancient Greek λύπη (lúpē, “pain, suffering”), λυπέω (lupéō, “to torment, to trouble”), Sanskrit लोपयति (lopáyati, “to harm, to destroy”), लुम्पति (lumpati, “to rob, to destroy”).
