From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wálśas, *wálśis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wolh₁ḱos, *h₂wolh₁ḱis, from the root *h₂welh₁- (hair; wool). Cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, twig, sprout), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (varəsa, hair (on the head)), Old Persian (vars), Persian گرس (gors, curled hair), Northern Kurdish pirç (hair) and Lithuanian valaĩ. Akin to Old Armenian վարս (vars), an Iranian borrowing.
