Proto-West Germanic

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly derived from Proto-Germanic *tullaz (that which is counted, reckoning), from Proto-Indo-European *dol- (calculation). Alternatively, a borrowing from from Medieval Latin toloneum, from Latin telōnēum (toll booth, custom house); this latter scenario is preferred by Pfeifer, as it may serve as the origin for both *tolnu and the traditionally-conflated Proto-West Germanic *toll in a simpler manner.[1]
