Quail may be influenced by the meaning of Old English CWELAN = Old Saxon QUELEN, (to die), but not from it. Seems to be a hybrid of meaning from Dutch QUELEN, (to pine away); and Old French QUAILIER, whence Middle English QUAILEN, (to curdle, coagulate). Compare also Welsh CHOLLER, (to perish), ultimately from same Proto-Indo-European root. Andrew H. Gray 11:07, 19 September 2015 (UTC) Andrew (talk)
