Possibly borrowed from Arabic طَمَع (ṭamaʕ, greed, ambition) or Yemeni Arabic طمع, as this genus was first coined by French naturalist and arachnologist Eugène Simon in 1882 in his work "Étude sur les arachnides de l'Yemen méridional."(literally, "Study of the arachnids of southern Yemen.")
