Dutch

Etymology

First attested as aelst in 1311. Derived from an inflected form of te (at) and a toponymic element of unknown etymology. The formerly widespread hypothesis of a derivation from els (alder, Alnus) with collectivising suffix -t is no longer considered plausible. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *alhust (dwelling place, shrine). Compare Aalst, Elst, Maasniel, Nieuwaal, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel.
