If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.

Grave character in Coptic

What is the character ˋ meant to signify in Coptic words? —CodeCat 22:10, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

It's called djinkim and in Bohairic it signifies that the following consonant is syllabic; for example 'mmon is pronounced əm-mon. In Sahidic it's a line above the consonant. In Bohairic it can also be fully written as an e as seen in ϣⲙ̅ϣⲉ vs. ϣⲉⲙϣⲓ.
When it is before vowels, I think in theory it represents a glottal stop. Γαλαδριήλ (talk) 22:58, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
How should it be transliterated? —CodeCat 23:01, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia uses "ə" in the first case. I have no idea in the case of vowels, but in spoken Coptic I think it's either ignored or pronounced as a glottal stop. We must research some more. Γαλαδριήλ (talk) 07:35, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
