I wanted to just make sure about where you got the word. is this a word whose pronunciation you have yourself heard in Shanghainese, and/or is this character one you have maybe seen in a specific source used with this meaning? 近来奈河桥上出了一个屁精，专好把人的卵当笛吹。遇有过桥的善人老卵常拖，他便钻出来蓦卵脬一戴，把卵咬住不放，多有被他咬落的。

I don't know much Wu, and it should just be taq, an alt form of 嗒, rather than ta. the version on ctext writes "一戴，吴语，「张口一咬」之意。" But then it says '咬住不放' further down, so I don't think this character refers to 'bite'." Ping me User:内存溢出的猫 plz!^📝瞄？_💬喵! 00:55, 9 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@内存溢出的猫 Hi there, thanks for the reply! I think in that case that 戴 might not be an alt form of 嗒 (to taste) at all, as that word would mean more to have a little taste of something eg soup, which doesn't seem like it is what was being meant here. As a contemporary speaker I would more likely interpret this to be something maybe conventionally written as 搭 (taq/teq), i.e. to attach oneself to or to stick to. It is possible that it is a usage that I'm not aware of but here bottom line it doesn't really seem to mean the same thing as "to taste". Would you mind if I take it down for now and maybe put it in the comment section of that line? Musetta6729 (talk) 00:11, 10 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Or actually, sorry, I'm having second thoughts about this only just now, also since I just realized I missed the footnote on the former one. I think it might mean the same thing as 嗒 there, yes you would be right. But if the two characters 戴 and 嗒 are just alt forms of the same word, maybe it would be better to keep the 戴 orthography as an alt form only on the actual page for the word 嗒, and remove 戴 itself from the dial-syn either way?
