Welcome

Here’s the standard welcome text for you:

Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Your old friend again?! I must admit it kind of has amusement value, doesn't it? Jcwf 01:02, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello!

Could you please add a pronunciation to the entry lough, please. I couldn't find anywhere. I'm glad to have found an Irish user here. Ferike333 15:25, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done! I've left a note on your talk page - Alison 05:42, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. By the time I got there, the pronunciation had already been changed. Well, I want to ask if you pronounced it like lock or flu? Sorry, I can't listen to the audio file, my laptop doesn't let it. Did I read well that you're really from Cork? I have got a teacher from there :) I think it's really nice of you to speak Irish Gaelic, our teacher doesn't. Several Hungarians have the same problem due to historical problems, but they all still speak our language. By the way, do you use this word in other phrases except Belfast lough in English? Thanks again:D --Ferike333 17:07, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Transgender

Hi! Regarding diff, I notice that Category:en:Transgender says it includes terms relating to the transgender community in the broad sense of that word, which would include hermaphrodites. (I did just tweak the wording, but the category specified that it used the broad sense and included intersex, crossdressing, etc even before I did that.) However, I imagine that the interpretation you seem to have had — that it used the more common, narrow sense of the word transgender — is the one people are most likely to have, which makes the category's current content misleading. Do you think we should split crossdressing and intersex off into their own categories, leaving Category:Transgender for only "narrow-sense" transgender-related words? - -sche (discuss) 18:39, 6 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

As a late follow-up to this: I have split off Category:en:Crossdressing and Category:en:Intersex. - -sche (discuss) 08:58, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
