Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

What is a side-horse? It isn't in any dictionary that I can find? SemperBlotto 08:14, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is same as a pommel horse. I have created the page for the word side-horse. Hope its OK. Anuragr

  • Yeah - the page is much better now. thanks much. I would try keeping the format in further entries I create.

Reversion

I sort of feel bad about reverting all those edits, but it's quicker for me to revert them than to format them. Etymology goes straight after the language header, apart from ===Alternative forms===. Unfortunately with a lack of contributors, admins often revert edits when it's simply quicker to do so than clean them up. Sorry. Mglovesfun (talk) 22:24, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

against is not a noun. Also, why don't you wikify your definitions? SemperBlotto 15:43, 19 October 2010 (UTC) It isaReply

  • I have updated it to preposition. My bad!

French

Please read WT:ELE. If you insert information that is both inaccurate and badly formatted (such as writing low german, not Low German) I will continue to revert. Technically redouter is from Old French if not from further back than that, but re- +‎ douter is better than nothing, if you format it. Mglovesfun (talk) 21:55, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I would refrain from editing French words Anurag

Same applies to any language. Information should be correct, and formatted as well as you can. Nobody expects you to learn our rigorous format right away, but making an effort will help. Mglovesfun (talk) 22:02, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have been using the template for creating new words when adding new Sanskrit words. So I think the formatting was taken care of. I am refraining from editing existing words, unless I get familiar with the format. As for the content of Sanskrit words, it is all quite simple; indisputably correct.
