A welcome and a tip

Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

If you're going to be reverting vandalism, you need to know our policies and practices. Now, for the tip: When I first started out doing what you're doing (before I became an admin), I would look in the revision history for the edit before the vandalism, then I would edit and save that revision. It gives you a big red warning about how you're going to wipe out all changes after that revision, but in this case, that's what you want. it has the advantage of guaranteeing that you get rid of everything in one edit. It's extra work, so you only do it when you see that there are multiple edits to the vandalism. Thanks for your work patrolling Recent Changes! Chuck Entz (talk) 19:46, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:49, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Marking talk pages for deletion

There's rarely a reason to do this, only for really obvious tosh or vandalism. You definitely never want to delete a talk page like Template talk:fr-conjtemp, which has a helpful link to the discussion that led it to be deleted! —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:47, 29 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that. The template doesn't exist but I didn't know that the link led to a useful page. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:48, 29 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Maintenance

Hi Pkbwcgs. I noticed your mass-removal of file links that I've added; they're broken not because they got deleted, but because they were renamed on Commons. Please see my list of files there and change the file links to point to the correct title instead of removing them unhelpfully. Thanks, —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 18:58, 29 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I did most of them but I don't know if I left any out. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:22, 29 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

All done. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:34, 29 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
