Welcome Message
Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
- You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Hello, please note that the Italian pronunciation template is only for Italian. Sicilian, Neapolitan, etc, may have their own modules in the future, but they don't yet. Ultimateria (talk) 03:52, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
- Yes, thank you. I use it at the moment because it is the closest thing there is, and for the entries I have added all the sounds are the same, I will not use it if there is a sound that cannot be produced in Italian but is used in such languages. SignorNic (talk) 04:08, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
- I say that not just because the sounds will often be wrong, but because it puts non-Italian entries into Italian categories (the main one being Category:Italian terms with IPA pronunciation). You can copy the IPA output from the template if you're confident it's correct, but please don't use the template itself outside of Italian entries. Ultimateria (talk) 15:43, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
- Ok, that clears it up, sorry about that. Do you know of a wiktionary page that explains how to enter IPA and pronunciation details correctly? It's quite a large site and I find the IPA to be challenging to get right.
- Thanks SignorNic (talk) 17:11, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
- I'd start with Wiktionary:Pronunciation for general info, although it's based on English pronunciation. For language-specific issues, you can look at pages titled "Appendix:XX pronunciation". These are linked to from the IPA template in the text "(key)". Appendix:Sicilian pronunciation isn't developed, but it does link to the Wikipedia page. Sicilian orthography will also be of interest. Let me know if you have any other questions. Ultimateria (talk) 17:34, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
