Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

Before you continue editing though, I’d request you familiarise yourself with our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI), which define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! MuDavid 栘𩿠 (talk) 02:37, 20 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - do you have any actual evidence that 阿布哈茲 / 阿布哈兹 (Ābùhāzī) is used in Japanese or Vietnamese? I can't find anything that indicates they are.

Also, please do not mark all of your edits as minor, because it is extremely misleading. Theknightwho (talk) 13:32, 20 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I made my own Japanese and Vietnamese sounds and converted them into Sino-Vietnamese transcriptions. Tuanlonloi2k6 (talk) 13:13, 21 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
That isn't how it works - these words need to actually exist for you to add them. Theknightwho (talk) 04:33, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Since no one explains this to you, and you are clearly acting in good faith, I'd like to explain why you're blocked. Here on Wiktionary, entries are created based on what are actually used by people, be it in speech or in writing. That means that entries that do not obviously enjoy widespread usage (basic words like ăn (to eat), tóc (head hair), nhà (house), etc., it actually extends much broader than that, but just understand it as "basic words") on here probably needs to be presented with attestation (just think of it as "record of usage").

Words (and forms) need to be attested being used (usually) by native speakers as part of the normal language in speech or writing, that means that quoted foreign elements (such as quoting a Chinese sentence in Sino-Vietnamese that is never used otherwise) and simple transliterations that aren't meant for cross-language usage (such as transliterating English igloo as i-glu as an one-off demonstration of pronunciation in a Vietnamese text) are most often not allowed.

Every language has a lot of words, Chinese has a lot of words, Chinese words can be read in Sino-Vietnamese and a lot of them are used in Vietnamese. However, this does not mean that every attested Chinese word is also a Vietnamese word when read in Sino-Vietnamese, again, they need to be attested being used by native speakers in (preferably) normal language contexts. I assume you are a native Vietnamese speaker, someone can quote a Tang poem to you in Sino-Vietnamese, does that mean every element in that poem suddenly Vietnamese? A lot of element in that poem might enjoy usage in normal Vietnamese texts, but, say, (ngã, I), would still not be a Vietnamese word as long as Vietnamese speakers (or, at least, a definable subset of them) don't use it as a normal pronoun in a normal text or speech, in attestable formats and (preferably) in substantial quantity. Yes it is. Tuanlonloi2k6 (talk) 05:10, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@PhanAnh123 Thanks for writing this out - this problem has come up repeatedly in Japanese and Korean as well, so it would probably be good to have it written down somewhere that we can point new users to.
As a side point, it reminds me of users who anglicise Latin terms that are never actually used in English (e.g. adding appronate as a synonym of bow or something). Theknightwho (talk) 18:06, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
This covers part of the issue, but I'm not sue this user will read it; I don't have they impression they actually read anyone's comments so far. MuDavid 栘𩿠 (talk) 04:04, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
