Etymology
Attested as de Kerk op Waterland in 1740. Compound of the toponym Waterland (derived from a compound of water and land) and the diminutive form of kerk (“church”). Waterland was an area of reclaimed land which was lost to flooding in 1375. The village sprang up around a small church built for persecuted Protestants from Flanders.
